Graphic design is so much a part of our modern world that it is hard to imagine living without it. This week, I’ve been doing a lot of research on Illustration for a client, and it got me thinking, when did Illustration and Graphic Design become essential to mankind? What is the main reason for using figures and symbols to instantly connect to the message and communicate?
The history behind Illustrations and Graphic Design is intrinsically connected to the evolution of visual communication throw-out history. Visual communication is about as old as our opposable thumbs, though it’s been a long journey from stone tools to digital tablets.
For some designers, studying the past can be very inspiring to create and innovate their work, for me, it helps me understand why do we use the symbols as we do. A great book and resource to look into is “ History of Illustration” by Susan Doyle, Jaleen Grove, and Whitney Sherman.
"History of Illustration covers image-making and print history from around the world, spanning from the ancient to the modern. Hundreds of color images show illustrations within their social, cultural, and technical context, while they are ordered from the past to the present. Readers will be able to analyze images for their displayed techniques, cultural standards, and ideas to appreciate the art form. This essential guide is the first history of illustration written by an international team of illustration historians, practitioners, and educators.” Amazon

As a curious designer, I've decided to create a timeline documenting how was Graphic Design path to becoming what he is known for today.
